Recent events have really polarized our nation. I’m not happy about it in the least, but I’m not changing my mind regarding my beliefs on the constitution.

Inalienable rights

Over the last several years I’ve had conversations with friends and family members that have questioned several of our constitutional rights. Of course, the conversations are well intended, but I believe they miss the point behind why the founding fathers took the actions they did. You either fully support the constitution or you don’t. You can’t pick and choose which of the inalienable rights you want support. It’s a package deal and when I see folks who feel differently it is worrisome. On top of that it’s a slippery slow anytime we try modifying, adjusting or worst change our inalienable rights. These rights were handed to us by our Creator, by God himself and recognized then by man.

Double standards

Whether you agree with it or not, you benefit from these freedoms and afforded the opportunity to voice your criticism or disbelieve or even negative approval of these rights. That is the beautiful thing about the recognition of our rights is that they are all encompassing. Political correctness is the worst thing to be invented in my opinion. I see political correctness as cowardice, as an excuse to avoid speaking the truth or speaking your mind. In fact, I feel as though it is a restriction on our First Amendment rights and part of a deconstructive plan to chip away our freedoms.  People use political correctness to silence those they may disagree with because they lack the courage to stand up for themselves or to stand up for what they believe in. There can be no freedom, no true freedom where political correctness exists.

Principle or juvenile

While I vehemently disagree with the burning or stomping of our American flag that action is protected by the First Amendment. Just like the incident here in Texas was also protected by the First Amendment. The scary thing that I see is those who are complaining or criticizing the events are doing so because they’re worried about offending Islam. The talks of restricting free-speech as a result should scare everyone. That should be a very clear indicator of the lack of courage most our leadership is displaying.

True checks and balances

Now it all comes full circle when we talk about the Second Amendment. My belief unlike some that I know is that there are no restrictions on your right to bear arms. As we work through several new instances of these anti-gun laws being overturned we should encourage folks to exercise their rights, just like we encourage free speech. Our Second Amendment is the failsafe for First Amendment as well as all other rights, and our way of life. There should be no limitations or restrictions, it is the ultimate “check and balance”. Are there some people who should not be allowed to legally own firearms? Absolutely, they are called criminals. If you are an upstanding citizen then I am not going to judge whether you should or should not exercise your right to bare arms.

While I feel some of these folks mean well, they are missing the point. They are thinking small and selfish, we cannot afford that so remember to think big.

"The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil constitution, are worth defending against all hazards: And it is our duty to defend them against all attacks." Samuel Adams
