In light of recent facts the Justice Department has exonerated Officer Darren Wilson from any wrong doing, what does that really mean. It has significant relevance to your own personal safety and here is why.

The Anti-gun agenda

Imagine having to go through the character assassination for doing your job. Imagine all the death threats levied against you by race haters. I find it ironic that those who cry about racism are the very same ones who acted as racists. Yes, the door swings both ways and everyone is guilty of it to some degree. The terrible part is this mob was so off base, was so in the wrong yet nobody wanted to say anything for fear of offending someone. The truth of the matter is that is part of why things are the way they are because people are afraid to call a spade a spade. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck then it is a duck. All of the looting, destruction of property, assaults and other mayhem just for doing his job, a public servant protecting the citizens of his community.

Unintended consequences

The real crime is going to be in the hesitation and trepidation of police officers the land over. I feel it is fair to assume no one wants to be the next Officer Wilson. That nobody wants to go through the ordeal he and his family have endured and who would blame them. So, what does that mean in laymen’s terms? It means if you expect your safety to be a top priority to anyone but yourself you better wake up and smell the torched business of Ferguson.

The taste of irony

Of course, an argument could be made that those who complained are the very same people who probably sided with the protestors. Making wild accusations without any proof of police brutality or that it is an epidemic did nothing but make the truth harder to surface. I read an article about a grass eater who was complaining to a large metro department in the US about police brutality. The reply from the department broke it down in pretty simple mathematical terms. It was epic the truth the department laid out for the public to swallow. The simple fact is being a police officers do an amazing job and it is one of the hardest jobs on the planet, along with being one of the most thankless.

Gratitude

These men and women do the very best they can with what they have to work with and at times I am at odds with their leadership because of the mountain of procedures that must be followed just so they don’t offend someone. It is sometimes ridiculous. The public needs to take a moment and acknowledge their services, thank them for helping to protect their community. Give them some slack and for God’s sake the benefit of the doubt because what we are facing is the likelihood many will be more reserved.

Handle things yourself

In case you need me to spell it out, I am betting there is a lingering doubt in the back of many officers minds. Will the next call or response be the next Darren Wilson? And if so, how will that effect you? Well folks, if you subscribe to a grass diet then chances are you are a volunteer victim and there is not much that can be done unless you wake up. For everyone else, the viewpoint I subscribe to is police is your backup. Before, during and after a critical incident they are just a phone call away. That when you recognize your life is in imminent danger you will do what is necessary to protect life first and foremost and if you need help you call for backup.

It is not rocket science folks, but if you haven’t taken your own personal safety seriously and personally then you are in for a world of hurt because it is not going to get better any time soon.

"To be prepared for war is one of the most effective means of preserving peace." George Washington, First President of the United States
